Impact Smeal Day

Registration for Alumni - March 31, 2023

* This registration is for alumni only. Smeal students should register at either or both of these two links:
- Career Roundtables (10:15 a.m.)  https://engage.tassl.com/event/10443
- Mocktails & Networking (1:30 p.m.) https://engage.tassl.com/event/10444

Impact Smeal Day provides alumni with the opportunity to come to campus and connect with the college through a number of activities such as interacting with current students, networking with other alumni, gaining professional insights, and hearing about college initiatives. The day is designed so that you can sign up for the sessions that work for your schedule. Alumni who cannot return to campus can still join us for Dean Whiteman's "State of the College" session and may register to receive the link to join.

  • Read details about the sessions below and then select "Impact Smeal Day Registration" at the bottom of the page to register.

  • During the day, the Smeal Student Mentors student organization will be hosting a silent auction in the Atrium. The proceeds of the silent auction will serve as the primary funds used to finance the organization's professional development activities for first-year students. Smeal Student Mentors is an organization comprised of upperclassmen who assist incoming Smeal students on their transition to Smeal and Penn State as a whole. Mentors help first-year students discover on-campus resources along with opportunities to get involved on and off campus to become well-rounded students. If you plan to bid on an item, please be ready to pay with cash or check (no credit card payments can be taken) before you leave campus.

  • Attendees who arrive to campus on Thursday, March 30 are invited to join us for the Smeal Alumni Awards Celebration & Hammond Society Recognition that evening, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Click here or select "Awards & Hammond Society Event Registration" at the bottom of the page for more information and to register for this event separately.

  • The next Impact Smeal Day will be on Friday, November 3, 2023.

  • Disclaimer acknowledgment: Your participation at this event indicates your consent to be photographed, filmed, or recorded for Smeal publicity through print or online communication.

Schedule for Friday, March 31

8:00 - 8:45 a.m.
  • Alumni Networking & Welcome: Kick off your day in the Atrium of the Business Building with other alumni and light continental breakfast items.

9:00 - 10:00 a.m. (this session includes a virtual option)

  • State of the College with Dean Whiteman: Join Chuck Whiteman, the John and Karen Arnold Dean of the Smeal College of Business as he looks back at the 2022-2023 academic year. During the session, alumni can ask questions and engage in a discussion with the Dean.
10:15 - 11:00 a.m.
  • Career Roundtable Discussions with Students: Alumni will have the opportunity to share their insights on various industries, job functions, roles, and workplace experiences with undergraduate and graduate students at tables in the Atrium. The tables will be labeled with a variety of business topics, and during the course of the session, alumni and students can partake in multiple discussions and engage with each other.
11:15 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
  • Smeal Executive Insights: Smeal's signature speaker series, which brings high-profile business leaders to the college will welcome Ganesh Iyer. Iyer is a three-time graduate of Penn State. He is president and CEO, E.D. Etnyre & Co. and former 20-year global executive at Caterpillar Inc.
12:15 - 1:00 p.m.
  • Lunch: Boxed lunches will be served in the Atrium of the Business Building to all Impact Smeal Day alumni attendees.

Alumni who are in Smeal's Mentoring Program can make arrangements ahead of time to invite their Student Protégé to join them for lunch (students should let us know they are coming through a separate form that was sent to them from the Alumni Relations Office).

Although this is the time we are aiming for the majority of our event attendees to eat, you can eat at any point between 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., if there is a time that better accommodates your schedule or your student protégé's schedule.
1:30 - 2:15 p.m.
  • Mocktails & Networking with Students: Alumni will help undergraduate and graduate students gain confidence with their in-person networking skills. Quick, small-group conversations will take place, allowing attendees to move around, casually get to know each other, and make connections over light refreshments. Representatives from Smeal’s Business Career Center will kick-off the session with networking tips & tricks, allowing students to put this advice into action.
2:30 - 3:15 p.m. (select one)
  • Pursuing a Side Hustle or Intrapreneurial Opportunity in the Workplace hosted by Smeal Alumni Career Services: Business professionals can reinvent their careers through the development of a side hustle or innovative project to steer an existing role in a new direction. This interactive group session will support participants as they ideate this new venture. Come ready to brainstorm and craft a working plan for success! Keleigh Asbury, Smeal's Director of Alumni Career Services will lead the session.

  • The Role of Alumni in Developing Ethical Leaders hosted by the Tarriff Center for Business Ethics and Social Responsibility: This panel, featuring alumni Frederik Wenzel, Jason O’Neill, and Jeff Douville of the Tarriff Center for Business Ethics and Social Responsibility Advisory Board, will share their perspectives on the need for specific engagement of alumni to support student development as ethical leaders. They will share their experiences with supporting students since joining the board, and opportunities for others to engage. They will also solicit feedback from alumni about opportunities to enhance student development in the area of ethical leadership.
3:30 - 4:00 p.m.
  • Alumni Networking & Farewell: We will close out the day together, allowing for additional alumni-to-alumni networking, information on how to stay engaged with Smeal, and an optional tour of the Business Building from the Smeal Ambassadors Student Organization.
